January 1999 Cover Sword
Kevin Cashen's Custom
Viking Broadsword
American Bladesmith Society (ABS) Master Bladesmith Kevin Cashen
describes this sword: "The blade itself
is 21 inches, and it is actually a conglomerate of several
Viking type artifacts that I have illustrations of. It does have more of
a Celtic theme to it - but why not? After all, the Vikings spent an awful
lot
of time around the Celts. The design in the guard is raised form the
damascus steel background and plated in 24k gold. Many things are not
truly accurate, as I prefer to put my own touch to my work. But I have
done accurate recreations inspired by some real works that I have had the
privilege of handling. There is nothing like holding a real 1,000+ year
old sword in your hands and seeing the patterns in the steel still bold
through the oxidation!"
And a work of beauty it is!
Kevin R. Cashen is certified by the American
Bladesmith Society as a Master Bladesmith. A winner of various awards
including "Best Custom Straight Knife" (for a short sword!), Kevin is well
known for his high performance art swords rarging from rapiers to Viking
swords. Kevin resides in Hubbardston, Michigan. e-mail:
