Sons of Scotland
Editorial, Fall 1999 Edition
by Adrian Ko
Editing is about change. However, as I wrote for and edited "Sons of Scotland", I realized that I was the one being changed.
For through the many months and late nights of toil, the fatigue, and even personal hardships, I had begun to perceive a life and a voice emerging from the issue - one that was historic, resonant and powerful - one that was beyond the capabilities of those writing for and editing it, and the eloquence of the words of the articles.
It was a voice arising from Scotland's ancestry and sacrifice as a reminder of the suffering, woes and tremendous price Scotland's sons and daughters paid for their freedom - speaking those who had a heart to learn again and an ear to hear.
So great was this voice that I now rewrite my Editoral column, because I do not want to cheapen the message and silence the voice.
I have been a member of the Clan Buchanan Society for two years, and wear a Great Kilt in Buchanan Hunting tartan when I attend the local Scottish Games and Gathering. It is more than the music that stirs the soul, the resounding music of the bagpipes, and the hearty Highland jokes. I close my eyes. I hear that voice. I will remember.
Regardless of your culture, if the heroes of the past of your nation have ever fought against oppression and tyranny and have paid in blood for their freedom, you might hear this voice. Even if you are one disconnected from his heritage but are noble in heart, you will hear it too. You too will remember the price of that freedom you now enjoy.
Never, ever forget.
