First Annual SE HEMA Alliance Gathering - 08-08-2009, 07:08 AM

We are pleased to announce --

First Annual Southeastern HEMA Alliance Gathering
sponsored by the Freifechter Guild

The Freifechter Guild is pleased to announce the First Annual Southeastern HEMA Alliance Gathering. This two-day event will take place October 24-25 in Tallahassee, Florida, at —

Jack L Morris American Karate Studios
4500 W Shannon Lakes Dr
Tallahassee, FL 32309

The event will offer instruction in:

• Longsword (both general principles and fencing from the bind).

• Meyer’s rapier (a cut and thrust weapon).

• Dusack.

• Polearms.

• Dagger.

• Wrestling (including ringen am schwert, or wrestling at the sword).

In addition, we plan to offer sparring clinics in the longsword and the rapier, providing immediate feedback and assistance from experienced fencers to enable participants to improve their sparring on the spot. There will, of course, be plenty of opportunities for open sparring.

Featured instructors will be:

• Jake Norwood, noted longsword authority, former ARMA deputy director, and a HEMA Alliance founder.
• Mike Cartier, Meyer expert.
• Jason Vail, dagger combat researcher.

Although the Freifechter Guild focuses on the study and interpretation of the texts authored by Joachim Meyer, in the inclusive spirit of the Alliance this is an open event which we hope will improve the skills of beginners and experienced HEMA students alike regardless of the lineage or manual they favor. Anyone interested in HEMA in the South (or anywhere for that matter) is encouraged to attend. Join us and share your experience in an atmosphere of brotherhood in arms.

Start time for the event itself is 12.30 p.m. Saturday, October 24, but plan to arrive early to complete sign in. The event will conclude at 5 p.m. Sunday, October 25.

As a Florida resident, I have to say this is exciting. We've had a dearth of community and events in the SE, and I'm glad to see you folks putting this on.

It's too bad the focus is entirely German, but I'll be happy to attend anyhow - maybe we can compare notes on traditions. I'm especially interested to see German staff, since my current project is English quarterstaff.
