Cover Sword: Summer 1999
Textured Damascus Short Sword by Don Fogg, Master Bladesmith

This month's cover sword is an award-winning Bone-Hilted Textured Damascus Short Sword. The blade is of wakizashi-length blade with a traditional shaped tang, forged in the shobu-zukuri style, with an incredible texture spanning the length of the pattern welded blade.

The tsuba (guard) and ferrule are also damascus. The seppa (washers/spacers) are shakudo - a copper and gold alloy.

The hilt is made of fossilized walrus ivory. Says Don Fogg, "This sword started with the fossil bone. The bark was water-worn, exposing the layering and coating it with a chocolate brown color that was skin deep. The bone was actually an artifact, a tool held by some prehistoric man. It was too perfect to touch - too beautiful to enhance in any way, and so the blade grew from it."

More photographs of a second but slightly different version of Don's award-winning textured damascus blade can be found in the Cover Article of this issue. Don Fogg's webite is located at www.dfoggknives.com.
